Violence and Bias in Amsterdam Clashes: In response to the report titled “Dutch authorities scramble to protect Israeli football fans after clashes” (Nov 9), which covered the violence in Amsterdam surrounding a Europa League match between Ajax and Maccabi Tel Aviv, it’s important to highlight a different perspective. Israel and its supporters have consistently portrayed themselves as victims in these incidents, but the reality is more complex.
Maccabi Fans’ Violent Reputation
Western media outlets, in many cases, have attempted to downplay the violent actions of Maccabi fans, who have a notorious reputation for aggression. More than 100 Maccabi supporters directly connect to the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), while others act as violent individuals influenced by the brutal actions of the army.
One notable exception in the media is Deutsche Welle, which revealed through fact-checking that Maccabi supporters were the aggressors, attacking pro-Palestine fans, contrary to the claims in some Western reports.
These fans went on a rampage through the streets of Amsterdam, chanting slogans such as “Let the IDF win” while using offensive language toward Arabs, attacking people, damaging property, and burning Palestinian flags.
Even more troubling was the response from Dutch authorities, who appeared to prioritize protecting these violent individuals. At the same time, pro-Palestine supporters were aggressively dealt with by police, as shown in images from the Dam Square protest.
Many European governments, instead of condemning the actions of Maccabi fans, sided with the perpetrators, ignoring the harassment faced by their citizens. Furthermore, these governments continue supporting the Israeli regime, which commits acts of violence and oppression against Palestinians, despite growing calls from European citizens to sever ties with it.
The role of European governments in perpetuating this situation raises questions about how they will respond to growing internal dissent, as the conflict unfolds.
