China Tests Moon Base Bricks: China is advancing its efforts to establish the first permanent lunar base by testing whether bricks for the structure could be made from the Moon’s own soil. A cargo rocket carrying experimental brick samples launched on Friday towards the Tiangong space station. This mission is part of Beijing’s ambitious goal to send humans to the Moon by 2030 and complete a functional lunar base by 2035.
According to the state-run news agency Xinhua, the Tianzhou-8 cargo spacecraft lifted off from the Wenchang Satellite Launch Center on Friday night, delivering supplies to China’s orbiting Tiangong space station.
Constructing a Moon base presents significant challenges. Any structure must endure extreme cosmic radiation, severe temperature fluctuations, and moonquakes. Additionally, transporting building materials from Earth is expensive and impractical. Researchers at a university in central Wuhan hope that using lunar soil itself could solve some of these issues.
They have developed prototype bricks composed of various Earth-sourced materials, like basalt, designed to mimic the characteristics of lunar regolith. Once these test bricks reach the space station, small samples will undergo rigorous testing to assess their durability and performance in the harsh environment.
“It’s primarily about exposure,” explained Zhou Cheng, a Huazhong University of Science and Technology professor in Wuhan. “We place the material in space and observe whether its durability and performance degrade under extreme conditions.”
This research could play a pivotal role in making the vision of a sustainable lunar base a reality.
