In regions like South and Central America, dense jungles and treacherous terrain made excavation a difficult and dangerous task. Yet, it was through this perseverance that Hiram Bingham uncovered Peru’s Machu Picchu in 1911, now one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
LiDAR Technology Uncovers Hidden Cities
Recent advances in archaeology use new technologies to detect ancient structures without digging. One breakthrough is LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging). This technology scans through dense vegetation to reveal hidden structures. In 2014, a study by the Nature Conservancy of Mexico used LiDAR to uncover traces of an ancient Maya city. PhD student Luke Auld-Thomas analyzed LiDAR scans. He identified the “lost city of Valeriana.” The city likely housed up to 50,000 people at its peak in the 8th and 9th centuries.
Auld-Thomas, who was analyzing these scans for clues about the Maya civilization, has been credited with discovering an entirely unknown city. The discovery not only sheds light on the Maya’s urban planning and societal organization but also shows how new technology can revive interest in ancient cultures. LiDAR, while a powerful tool, is often out of reach for many researchers due to the costs involved. However, Auld-Thomas’ work demonstrates that creative thinking, perseverance, and the willingness to explore existing data can lead to extraordinary discoveries, even for those without access to cutting-edge resources.
The “Valeriana” discovery promises to offer valuable insights into the daily life, religion, and politics of the Maya civilization. For modern archaeologists, it’s a reminder that the past still holds many secrets. These can be uncovered through chance, determination, or innovative technology. Just as Heinrich Schliemann relied on maps and ancient texts to find Troy, today’s researchers like Auld-Thomas are proving that, even in the digital age, the spirit of discovery remains alive and well.
