Economic Turmoil: Stocks Plummet
Karachi: The stock market experienced a significant downturn on Thursday, reflecting the growing challenges in the broader economic landscape.
According to analyst Ahsan Mehanti, the market faced increased pressure following a report by international investment bank JPMorgan. The report projected a potential 400 basis points hike in the policy rate by the central bank, reaching 20 percent by the end of 2022-23, driven by soaring inflation rates.
Adding to the concerns, a downward trajectory in remittances, coupled with an unfavorable business environment revealed in a recent business confidence survey conducted by the foreign investors’ chamber of commerce, further unsettled investors.
As a consequence, the KSE-100 index saw a dip, settling at 41,651.61 points—down by 167.68 points or 0.4% from the previous session.
