You Truly Deserve
You Truly Deserve: Europe had a difficult week. At a meeting in Davos, European leaders discussed US President Donald Trump’s threats to take over Greenland. They warned that such actions would destroy respect for national sovereignty and weaken the international order.
Force Over Law
Canada reacted as well. Prime Minister Mark Carney said Trump’s threats were damaging North Atlantic relations. He warned that the world was moving toward a system where force replaces law.
Double Standards
It was striking to see powerful Western leaders suddenly worry about sovereignty. Many countries have faced this reality for decades. After 9/11, the US invaded Iraq and Afghanistan. Europe supported those wars. Denmark joined NATO missions without questioning sovereignty. The US also carried out drone strikes in Pakistan and Yemen.
False Moralism
These actions show that the rules-based international order failed long ago. Western powers applied these rules only to themselves. They ignored them when brown and black countries suffered.
Denmark’s outrage over Greenland is ironic. Denmark is a colonial power. The US is a settler-colonial state. Canada also sits on land taken from Indigenous peoples. Yet these countries lecture others about sovereignty.
Stolen Control
Denmark first traded with Greenland. It then set up outposts and took control. The Danish state imposed a trade monopoly. A trading company later became a ruling authority.
Most leaders ignore the wishes of Greenland’s Indigenous Kalaallit people. They do not want rule by Denmark or the US. Powerful states treat Greenland as property. They deny the Kalaallit political voice. The only fair solution is self-rule for Greenland.
Power Protects Power
This crisis reveals the true purpose of the international order. Western powers created it to protect their own claims. They also use it to justify force against weaker nations.
Most of the world has never felt protected by this system. Power has always meant bullying for them. Europe now faces the same reality. It reduced defense spending and relied on comfort.
Growing Dependence
Europe now lacks the power to resist US pressure. Its weak economy and aging population worsen the problem. The US may exploit these weaknesses. Europe could become economically and militarily dependent. History may repeat itself. Europe may face the same treatment it once imposed on others.
