Instances where this limit was surpassed lasted no more than two hours. Resulting in no reported “mass mortality events” associated with this extreme. However, it’s crucial to note that lethal heat doesn’t need to reach such extremes. Individual tolerance levels vary based on factors like age, health, and socio-economic conditions, caution experts.

During the previous summer, Europe witnessed a staggering estimated count of over 61,000 deaths due to heat-related issues. Surprisingly, the region typically experiences humidity levels that rarely escalate to form hazardous wet bulb temperatures. However, with the persistent global temperature surge—highlighted by the previous month being recorded as the hottest in history—scientists issue a stark warning about the escalating occurrence of perilous wet bulb events.

Understanding the Theoretical Survival Limit
Initially measured by using a wet cloth on a thermometer to assess evaporation rates, today’s calculation of wet bulb temperature relies on precise heat and humidity measurements. The theoretical human survival limit stands at 35 degrees Celsius wet bulb temperature, representing both dry heat and 100 percent humidity. This equates to a scorching 46 degrees Celsius at 50 percent humidity.
New Insights from Pennsylvania State University Study
Recent research conducted by Pennsylvania State University delved deeper into this survival limit. In controlled conditions within a heat chamber, young and healthy individuals reached their “critical environmental limit” at a significantly lower 30.6 degrees Celsius wet bulb temperature. This finding challenges the previously assumed threshold of 35 degrees Celsius, indicating a narrower margin for human tolerance to extreme heat and humidity.
The research team estimated that under these conditions. It would take five to seven hours before reaching “dangerously high core temperatures,” as highlighted by Daniel Vecellio, a member of the research team.
