National Wheat Stocks Exceed 5.6M Tons
The wheat stocks in the country have reached a level of over 5.614 million tons, adequately meeting local consumption needs and maintaining strategic reserves until the arrival of the next crop. National Wheat Stocks Exceed 5.6M Tons.
During the ongoing week, carry forward reserves of grains have been reported at over 1.831 million tons. A senior official from the Ministry of National Food Security and Research stated that the government procured approximately 6.614 million tons during the last season to meet domestic staple grain requirements and uphold strategic reserves. In efforts to ensure smooth local supply and stabilize prices, the government has imported around 863,314 metric tons of wheat.
The total availability of grains for the season was 9.308 million tons, of which the government has released 4.711 million tons to supply flour and other products in local markets. Moreover, the private sector procured approximately 3,921,762 metric tons of wheat from growers. The processing of this amounted to 3,018,622 metric tons, resulting in private sector wheat stocks totaling 903,140 metric tons.
Regarding wheat sowing across the country, the progress is significant, with over 50.85 percent completion against the set targets for the current season (2022-23). So far, wheat cultivation has covered over 11.62 million acres in grain-producing areas, aiming to meet domestic requirements and potentially enable exporting.
In Punjab, wheat sowing has reached 56.06 percent of areas, cultivating over 9.24 million acres. Rain-fed areas across all provinces have shown promising growth due to timely rains and government incentives, encouraging wheat sowing. In Sindh Province, wheat sowing has reached 36.20 percent, covering 1.01 million acres, with targets set at 2.79 million acres.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cultivated over 1.37 million acres of wheat, falling short of its target of 2.22 million acres. The province has completed sowing in over 61.71 percent of areas.
