Foreign Policy Efforts: President Donald Trump is known for his unpredictable personality and leadership style. However, a more important issue is his tendency to start major projects without completing them. He often launches ambitious plans but fails to bring them to a successful end. This pattern has become clear in several areas of his foreign policy.
Unrealistic Goals
Trump often sets goals that are difficult to achieve. When he faces obstacles, he changes direction instead of solving the problem. He shifts his attention to new issues and leaves earlier initiatives unfinished.
Gaza Peace Plan
His Gaza peace plan is a clear example. Trump announced the plan with great publicity seven months ago. Later, he shifted his focus to the conflict with Iran and Israel. As a result, the Gaza plan lost momentum. Although a ceasefire was reached, Israeli attacks continued and killed hundreds of Palestinians. Israel still controls large parts of Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also ordered further military operations in the area. Trump’s plan called for an Israeli withdrawal, but that process never began. The peace plan stopped after its first phase. The proposed international stabilization force was never created.
Failed Reconstruction Effort
Trump also created the Board of Peace in January 2026. He assigned it the task of rebuilding Gaza. However, reconstruction has not started. Reports suggest that the organization faces legal and political problems. Its fund also lacks money. Trump promised to transform Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” but that vision remains distant. Meanwhile, Gaza’s people continue to face severe humanitarian hardships and widespread destruction.
Ukraine Peace Efforts
Trump’s efforts to end the Ukraine war show a similar pattern. He promised to end the conflict quickly. He also claimed the war would never have started under his leadership. His administration first pushed Ukraine to accept terms favorable to Russia. Later, the United States and Ukraine agreed on a 20-point peace plan in December 2025.
However, Trump repeatedly changed his position. He criticized Ukraine’s leadership and temporarily suspended military aid. He threatened sanctions against Russia but never imposed them. His administration also organized several rounds of talks between Ukraine and Russia.
Failed Summit Talks
Many observers expected Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska in August 2025 to produce a breakthrough. Trump himself raised those expectations. However, the meeting produced no ceasefire and no peace deal. Trump later argued that a full peace agreement was better than a temporary truce. Even so, negotiations made little progress. The talks eventually stalled.
Stalled Peace Process
Ukrainian officials believed that Washington was unwilling to pressure Russia. Trump continued to claim that peace was near. Russian officials disagreed and said no clear plan existed. Secretary of State Marco Rubio later admitted that the process had stalled. As the war continues, both sides appear to have lost confidence in the negotiations.
Iran Challenge
The world is now watching Trump’s approach to the Iran conflict. The situation remains uncertain. Neither lasting peace nor renewed war seems imminent. The diplomatic deadlock may continue for months. Trump faces growing political and economic costs if the crisis remains unresolved. This time, he may find it harder to leave without a deal. Any lasting settlement will require compromise and long-term guarantees against future conflict.
Damaged US Credibility
These unfinished diplomatic efforts have damaged America’s international reputation. Allies may question Washington’s reliability. Rivals may feel encouraged to resist American pressure. When the United States starts major initiatives but fails to finish them, it loses credibility. Over time, this weakens America’s influence in global affairs.
