Peace Talks: The United States and Iran will meet in Doha on Tuesday. The meeting follows weekend military strikes between both countries. These clashes raised fears about the future of the interim peace agreement. Both sides want to reduce tensions and continue peace talks.
Doha Peace Talks
US President Donald Trump said Iran requested the meeting. He said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner would represent the United States. White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the United States wants peace to continue. She also warned Iran not to attack ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian officials say the meeting will focus on the Strait of Hormuz. They want to improve its security and reduce tensions. Some reports say both countries will also continue technical discussions under the peace agreement.
Peace Agreement
The United States and Iran signed a 14-point peace agreement on June 17. They agreed to stop fighting and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. They also agreed to hold 60 days of talks on important issues, including Iran’s nuclear programmed.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will visit Türkiye and Iran from July 3 to July 6. He will meet both countries’ leaders. He will ask them to avoid further conflict.
Hormuz Meeting
Iran and Oman held their first joint meeting in Muscat. They discussed the future management of the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Iran would remove the mines from the strait. He also criticized Emmanuel Macron after the French president offered support for mine-clearing efforts.
Frozen Assets
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Qatar will release the first $6 billion of Iran’s frozen assets. Qatar holds a total of $12 billion in Iranian funds. He called the peace agreement a major victory for Iran. He also welcomed the sanctions relief for Iran’s oil and petrochemical sectors. Officials expect Qatar to release the money in two payments.
