World and Religion: Many people believe they should balance deen (religion) and dunya (worldly life). They see this as the ideal way to live. Religious families often repeat this idea. However, some scholars argue that this belief is not fully correct.
Deen Comes First
People often point to the life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to support the idea of balancing deen and dunya. The Prophet traded, made treaties, built a state, and fought wars. He lived fully in this world. However, his actions always served Islam and obedience to Allah. His worldly actions were part of his deen, not separate from it.
This shows that deen and dunya are not equal things that need balance. Deen holds a higher position. It gives meaning and direction to worldly life. Muslims understand right and wrong through deen. Even when people defend the idea of balance, they still use religion as their main proof.
The Quran explains that Allah created life as a test. It also says humans and jinn were created to worship Him. This means deen gives purpose to human existence. Dunya is simply the place where humans practice and prove their faith.
The Purpose of Dunya
People usually use the word dunya for daily worldly responsibilities. These include earning money, raising children, and running societies. Some people think these duties stand apart from religion. However, Islam teaches that worldly duties can also become acts of worship.
The first Muslim community handled politics, trade, and social life while following Islamic principles. They earned wealth to spend it in the way of Allah. This shows that deen should guide all worldly actions.
Islam teaches that a believer should connect every part of life to Allah. The Quran says: “Surely my prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death are all for Allah.” This means religion should shape every action, not just worship rituals.
Religion and Modern Thinking
Modern secular thinking divides life into separate areas like business, family, politics, and religion. It treats religion as only one part of life. However, Islam does not separate life in this way. Islam views deen as part of every area of human existence.
According to this understanding, business, politics, and family life all fall under deen. Nothing in the world lacks moral or spiritual meaning. Every moment can bring a person closer to Allah if the intention is correct.
Islam does not ask Muslims to abandon worldly responsibilities. Instead, it teaches them to place dunya under the guidance of deen. A simple worldly action can become an act of worship when done sincerely for Allah.
The article argues that justice means giving everything its proper place. Deen deserves the highest place because it gives purpose to life. Dunya only gains value when it serves deen.
